Houghton Elementary School is having a blast with ‘Rock Your School Day’ event

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) — Houghton Elementary School got rockin’ with the students for its “Rock Your School Day” event.

Pupils were welcomed to school on Friday morning with live music, a red carpet and paparazzi.

This is the second year that the event has been organized after a successful first year.

“Last year when we held our event, the kids came to school, said Rebekah Schmidt, Grade 1 teacher and event organizer. “And some of their responses were, ‘This is the best day I’ve ever had in my life’ or ‘I’ve never had so much fun in school’, so we knew that was something that we wanted to repeat.”

Several grants allowed them to enhance last year’s event, including the inclusion of a balloon arch and photo booth.

Students were also treated to live music on the playground from local band Rewind. There were also demonstrations by Mind Trekkers from Michigan Tech University (MTU).

Organizers say they hope the event helped students feel good about themselves and excited to learn.

“I really hope that when they walked into school this morning, they felt like a rock star,” Schmidt continued. “It’s so they can understand how important they are and how important their learning is. I hope they feel really good about themselves and being a student at Houghton Elementary.

Large and small gift certificates from KC Bonkers Toys and Coffee and Good Times Music were available for the lucky winners of each class.

Schmidt says they already have ideas for next year’s event.

“There are already things in the works for next year,” added Schmidt. “Do we want to go with the rock and roll theme, or are we going to change things up completely? I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.
