Today, Los Angeles-based alt-pop singer-songwriter McCall announces his dynamic and evolving debut album, …to be a dream… which will be released on July 15 and is available for pre-order from now, as well as her new self-directed single and video, “Perfect Timing” everywhere now. The track finds McCall coming to terms with a relationship coming to its natural end as it turns into an explosive, pop-filled sigh of relief. Although bittersweet, this conclusion is ultimately peaceful and joyful, allowing the two to leave as whole people rather than parts of themselves.

Ones To Watch, who debuted in the video, said: “This budding creator has all the attributes that make her an enviable tour de force to watch, including directing and editing the video for her latest single, ‘Perfect Timing’,” adding, “With each new iridescent gem rising artist McCall drops, our crush on the Los Angeles-based alt-pop artist’s song continues to deepen.”

With over 10 million streams across platforms and locations on Spotify’s Fresh Finds, and an interview with Ones To Watch, who wrote that the standout attribute of the rising star’s previous EP, On Self Loathing , is “its ability to discuss mental health while avoiding cliché, preaching or melodrama”, and that while there are elements of hyper-pop, it’s “grounded, using the eccentricities of the subgenre without no trace of his ridiculousness”. Tastemakers from UPROXX to EARMILK to Consequence were captivated by McCall’s imaginative and poignant art. The American songwriter described McCall’s “Disaster” as a powerfully building track that songs like it “grow and propel”. They pierce you and you don’t even know why or how. It’s a rush that hits before you even know it was near.” With a feature on NPR Music‘s New Music Friday Playlist on her resume, McCall has consistently proven herself to be a true force. , making her one of the most compelling indie-pop musicians around.

Now, in 2022, McCall has only continued to evolve with her next debut album. A serious but ethereal coming-of-age project,…to be a dream…finds McCall coming to terms with growing up and discovering who she is and who she would like to be. Across eight tracks, the musician takes an honest look at the relationships in her life and encourages herself to let go of any negativity and resentment she may harbor. McCall says: “The album follows themes of strained relationships between friends, family and partners. I realized that my self-loathing (as detailed on the previous EP, ‘On Self Loathing’) did not exist in a vacuum. Because I am exceptionally hard on myself, it felt natural to set high standards for the people in my life as well. I was quick to hurt someone’s feelings under the guise of “love.” hard”.

That’s when McCall started recognizing patterns and deciding she wanted to make a change and it started with writing. McCall continues, Noticing this, I was then faced with a feedback loop: “You are a bitter person and that is why people treat you badly” and/or “People treat you badly and that justifies you be a bitter person”. I used writing these songs to try to explain both sides of the feedback loop to myself so I could see it clearly. While it didn’t lead to the conclusion of who committed original sin, it did help release a lot of resentment that I was unaware I was clinging on to so tightly.”

“Perfect Timing” redefines what a breakup anthem might sound like. He doesn’t let anyone feel down or lost, but proudly accepts reality, enveloped in hopeful and optimistic energy. McCall explains, “This song is about coming to terms with the end of a relationship without finding reasons to hate the other person. The verses document bittersweet memories that are painful to think about in the midst of a breakup, but the chorus explodes into this joyful cacophony of sound and speaks of the confidence and relief that comes when you realize that everything will be fine regardless.”

The music video, directed by McCall herself, showcases McCall’s editing and styling as she wears all-white and clown makeup, bouncing between shots of street dancing and dancing against an all-white backdrop. As it evokes confidence and freedom, the visual shows McCall freeing herself from a destroyer in her quest to discover more of herself.

While creating the visual, McCall says she had never felt more confident as a director and editor, and it quickly became the most fulfilling video she had ever worked on. Giving more context to his storyline, McCall adds, “‘Perfect Timing’ is the third in a four-part story based on our anti-hero, the Mime. The Mime is constantly in search of an idealized version of herself, portrayed by the Starlet, and finally realizing in this video that she will never become ‘perfect’.”

Through the track and its video, McCall discovers the good side of a breakup, the part where you feel more free than ever. “Although the song is about a breakup, it’s so joyful. I wanted the video to be as energetic and joyful as possible, because sometimes breakups are a good thing. In my case, it gave me the space to explore my sexuality, go to therapy, and heal parts of myself that I had ignored for the sake of the relationship I was in.”

With “Perfect Timing,” out everywhere now, McCall makes peace with the end of a relationship to find freedom within herself. Due July 15, …to be a dream…, the eight-track debut album available for pre-order now, allows McCall to explore his past, present and future to ultimately improve as she mends broken relationships – and she’s only just begun.
