Place Theater

In 1936, the historic 800-seat Plaza Theater opened with the world premiere of George Cukor Camille, with Robert Taylor and Greta Garbo. The theater featured whimsical village facades carved into the walls and twinkling star-like lights on the ceiling. It was then hired to Earl Strebe, the city’s premier film operator, who screened first-run films and presented live radio shows about the Depression Era.

Over the years, the theater has hosted memorable performances by stars such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. In addition, artists Jack Benny, Bob Hope and The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show broadcast a radio show from the Plaza, bringing national attention to Palm Springs.
